Health Services

The guidelines set forth by the Indiana State Department of Health in the Communicable Diseases Reference Guide for School Personnel are followed by the district in determining exclusions, restrictions, and control measures for students and their illnesses. Students are to be kept out of school for the following reasons:

  • Oral temperature above 99.6 degrees. Students should be fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medications before being sent back to school.

  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye), if considered contagious

  • Impetigo, until treatment has begun

  • Scabies, until treated

  • Head lice, exclusion until first treatment with removal of nits

  • Vomiting or diarrhea with or without fever

  • Ringworm, until treatment has begun

  • Undiagnosed rash if fever is present

  • Viral eye infections, until physician allows return to school

  • Chickenpox, exclusion for six days from appearance of vesicles or until all vesicles have scabbed

  • A positive culture for Streptococcal throat infection (strep throat) exclusion until student has had at least 24 hours of appropriate treatment and is without a fever

  • Drainage that cannot be covered with a bandage; this includes drainage from ears

These reasons listed are not the only reasons that students need to be kept home. It is intended to be a guide. ALWAYS check with your family doctor if you are uncomfortable about your child’s health.
