Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator - Kyle Mullins

Coach Mullins enters his sixth season as Head Coach of the Warrior Football Program. Prior to Scottsburg, Mullins spent the previous seven seasons as a varsity assistant coach at Ben Davis High School.  During his tenure at Ben Davis, Coach Mullins  served as Varsity Wide Receivers Coach, Varsity Defensive Line Coach, and Head Junior Varsity Coach. 

Coach Mullins was a four-year high school Varsity Letterman at Defensive End and Offensive Line. He received his B.S. in Technology Education and his M.S. in Educational Administration from Purdue University. During his undergraduate career, Mullins worked for the Purdue Football Program, assisting both the offensive and defensive line coaches for the Boilermakers.

Coach Mullins enters his thirteenth year teaching Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing, and Advanced P.E. 

He and his beautiful wife, Danielle, have been married for ten years and are proud parents of seven year old son, Landry, five year old daughter, Adele, and 20 month old son, Rhett.




Offensive Coordinator/RB's - John Mastin
Coach Mastin


Coach Mastin is a 1967 graduate of New Castle where he lettered in football for the Trojans earning All-North Central Conference honors. He was a 1971 Ball State University graduate earning varsity letters as a member of the Cardinals football program. In the fall of 1971, he began his teaching and coaching career at Charlestown High School.
Coach Mastin helped start the football and wrestling programs at the Greater Clark County Schools in 1971. He served as an assistant coach for eight seasons before becoming head coach in 1979 and remaining that position for 25 seasons. The Pirates, during that time frame won 8 Mid-Southern Conference Championships, 1 Cluster Title, 3 IHSAA Sectional Titles, 1 Regional Championship, along with 141 regular season wins.  In 1989 the Pirates were 12-1 during the regular season and fell to Roncalli in the Semi-State.  He was honored by being named to the South All-Star coaching staff.  As head wrestling coach Mastin was responsible for founding the Southern Indiana Wrestling Conference.  In his 19 seasons the Pirates won numerous S.I.W.C. Championships and a Jeffersonville Sectional Title in 1989. In addition to football and wrestling, Coach Mastin was assistant baseball coach for 2 seasons and a track coach for 27 seasons.
Coach Mastin has three sons, two stepdaughters, and nine grandchildren.  Having called Scottsburg home since 1981, he and wife Sonja, both retired from teaching in 2011.  One thing is certain; he is extremely happy to have the opportunity to return to the coaching ranks and help establish Scottsburg as "a football town”!


Special Teams Coor./Passing Coor./O Skill - Nicholas Cotner

Coach Cotner enters his 6th year coaching ath the high school level. Cotner's coaching journey began at his Alma Mater, Crawford County, and he also served as a Varsity Assistant prior to accepting teaching and coaching jobs at Scottsburg High School. Cotner has coached WRs, QBs, DBs, and Special Teams during his coaching tenure.

Coach Cotner was part of the first varsity football team at Crawford County, where he played WR/CB/PR. He was the first scholarship football player from Crawford Countyand and part of the team with most wins in a single season in program history. 

Cotner played college ball at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was a slot receiver for Concordia.

Cotner is in his second year teaching Social Studies at Scottsburg New Tech.




Defensive Backs/Head J.V. Coach - Barry Thompson

Coach Thompson starts his second year as Varsity WR/DB Coach. Coach Thompson grew up in Mississippi/Alabama where he played both football and baseball, lettering two out of his four years. He graduated high school in 1979 and did a short stint at Mississippi State with a walk-on invite for football, but it never came to fruition.

He left college and joined the United States Air Force where he received certification as an air traffic controller. In1982 while assigned to K. I. Sawyer AFB he met Laura and the two were married two years later. In 1986 he left the Air Force and subsequently worked as a controller for the Federal Aviation Administration – which, after several moves, landed him at Louisville International Airport in 1996. Coach Thompson put in a combined total of
twenty-five years as an air traffic controller.

He and Laura raised two daughters Morgan Taylor and Abby Tyler and have called Scottsburg home since 1996.
Coach Thompson feels it’s an honor to work with the whole coaching staff here at Scottsburg and a blessing to work with the young men on this team.

Linebackers - Steve Deaton 

 

Coach Deaton begins his sixth season as an assistant coach in the Warriors' program. After four seasons with the middle school teams primarily as the defensive coordinator, this is Deaton's second season as inside linebackers coach with the varsity program. 
In 1981, Coach Deaton graduated from Austin High School. He moved to Florida in 1983, met his wife-to-be, Chrissie, in 1986, and were married in 1990. They relocated to Scott County in 1995 and have three children and one granddaughter. Chrissie is a long-time employee of the Scott County Family YMCA and is the Group Exercise Coordinator. Their eldest son, Joseph, was a 7th grader on the first ever Scott County Youth Football squad. Their youngest son, Brantley, is a current Senior on the team, and is also a member of the basketball team. Emily, their daughter, was a member of the Band of Warriors that performed all four of her years in the state finals in Indianapolis.
Currently, Deaton is employed at SHS as a Business Teacher. Coach Deaton is truly committed to the Warrior program and to ensuring all players honor their obligations by being students first.

Coach Bell

Coach Bell enters his third season as Varsity Offensive Line Coach. Coach Bell is from Jennings County where he played football for the Panthers. In 2012, after graduating from Jennings County High School, he enrolled at Indiana State University, where he graduated in 2016.


In the Fall of 2016 he took a teaching job at Scottsburg High School where he taught social studies for one year before transferring to Scottsburg Middle School to teach Seventh Grade Social Studies. Outside of his football life he is a huge History buff and enjoys spending time with his girlfriend, friends and family.


Currently Coach Bell resides in Jennings County, but is proud to be an honorary member of the Scottsburg community and to be a part of the Warrior football program.





Offensive/Defensive Line Volunteer - Joey Higdon
Coach Higdon


Coach Higdon enters his fourth season as a Assistant Coach for the Warrior Program. He has coached six years in the Scott County Youth Football League. Coach Higdon has lived in Scottsburg his entire life and graduated from Scottsburg in 1988. He worked for the Scott County Probation Department while he was attending IU Southeast. After graduating he became a Probation Officer and is currently the Assistant Chief Probation Officer for Scott County.

Joey resides in Scottsburg with his thirteen year old son Karson and ten year old daughter Kendra, both are very active in sports and the community. He is very proud to be a part of the Warrior family, and  happy that these players have an opportunity to play football for their hometown.
