New Tech Community Service

Scottsburg New Tech is committed to encouraging our students to give back to their community today and in the future. Each year, we spend a day in the spring and in the fall going to various places in our community and working. Some of the services we have provided have been raking leaves, painting, landscaping, cleaning, and picking up trash. Over the past few years, we have made it know to community members that our students are eager to assist. Therefore, we continually have a list of volunteer opportunities for students in our office.

Students are also encouraged to go out and find volunteer opportunities in areas of their interest. Students are allowed to count services completed as long as they are not paid for their services and the service is not part of their family responsibility. We have a form in the New Tech office that the student fills out and gets signed by the person in charge of the activity in order for the student to get credit for their hours.

Habitat for Humanity.
On May 2, 2012, an EF-4 tornado swept through Henryville, Indiana causing extensive damage. Not only did this tornado destroy businesses and schools, but it destroyed the homes of many families.
After many months of landscape planning and collaboration with Habitat for Humanity representative Houser Canter, junior Emily Walker called the entire school to help mend the devastation Scottsburg's neighboring county underwent. After word went around that the entire school would be involved in this project, students were quick to help. Geometry classes created personalized landscape plans for each individual house, and advisories were assigned a family. On March 2, 2013, our New Tech school took a bus to Henryville, and landscaped ten houses in a subdivision. This is one of the many community events Scottsburg New Tech has been a part of. Park Days
Each year, New Tech participates in two "park days." During these park days, students are bussed to numerous places including local parks, courthouse, firehouse and other places around the community. Each advisory is assigned an area and work together as a team to beautify our county. After hours of work, students all meet in a common area and eat together. This is just one of the events New Tech students participate in.
